What We Do
Chess in Slums Africa (CISA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting children from underserved communities through the strategic use of chess, STEM education, and socio-emotional development. Founded in 2018 by Tunde Onakoya, CISA began with the simple goal of teaching chess to children in slum communities as a means to enhance their cognitive and life skills. Over the years, our organization has evolved to include comprehensive educational programs that now integrate robotics, AI, and digital literacy alongside chess education.
Our programs are designed to provide holistic support to children, addressing not only their educational needs but also their social and emotional well-being. By offering scholarships, vocational training, and mentorship, we ensure that our beneficiaries receive continuous support until they become productive, active, and responsible members of society. CISA operates in several slum communities across Nigeria, with a focus on creating safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environments.

Chess Training and Life Skills
Through chess, we engage children from marginalized communities, teaching essential skills like critical thinking, patience, and problem-solving.
STEM/Robotics & Digital Skills
We equip our champions with a strong foundation in STEM and digital skills to prepare them for the future economy. Hands-On Learning: Robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence (AI), coding, graphic design, machine learning, web development, and more.
LIFELINE Education & Empowerment
We provide scholarships, vocational training, mentorship, civic education, and financial literacy empowering participants to confidently pursue their goals and emerge as future leaders within their communities.

We draw inspiration from the powerful principles of chess. Just as the Pawn—often seen as the weakest piece—can be promoted to a Queen, the most formidable piece, upon reaching the 8th rank, we believe every child has the potential to rise from their disadvantaged circumstances to a position of strength and opportunity.
